The CSPA is comprised of both Mental Performance Consultants and Registered Psychologists and asks its members to conduct themselves in a manner that is consistent with their training and qualifications. All Professional Members with the CSPA are qualified to work with coaches and athletes towards assisting them in achieving their performance potential through the facilitation of mental skills development in many areas that include, but are not limited to:
- reaching one's performance potential in sport and/or other performance environments;
- regulating arousal, stress, and/or emotions associated with training and competitions;
- improving confidence, commitment, and/or concentration;
- managing time and/or balancing roles effectively;
- preparing optimally towards achieving training and performance excellence;
- creating and maintaining positive environments (e.g. teamwork, leadership);
- improving communication skills (e.g. with coaches, between teammates, etc.);
- improving recovery and regeneration;
- learning specific performance enhancement techniques (e.g. imagery, goal-setting);
- effectively debriefing and evaluating performance;
- improving decision-making;
- assisting with an athlete's injury rehabilitation; and
- helping athletes make a positive transition from sport.
Based on their training and qualifications, Registered Psychologists can help athletes address dysfunctionality, covering issues such as addiction, depression, eating disorders, and relationship issues.
